Top 3 Things Overheard at IWLA Convention

Top 3 things overheard at the International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA) 2011 Annual Convention

Green Initiatives – It is time for logistics companies to start thinking green (if they aren’t already). As our customers begin to focus on environmentally sound practices, they are beginning to look for logistics companies with a similar focus. Over the next few years logistics companies that favor green practices will have a competitive advantage in the marketplace.

Industrial Real Estate – We are still in a buyers market and this will continue into the foreseeable future. Unlike the residential market the industrial landlords were initially somewhat insulated from the downturn by long term leases. Now these leases are starting to come up for renewal and lease rates have been depressed. This, of course, can lead to issues with the banks who have made the loans on the properties. While there are a few industrial markets who have not felt the downturn as severely, the industrial market is expected to continue to be soft in the near future.

Information Systems – IT capability is an ever increasing differentiator in the logistics industry. The three most important logistics IT capabilities from a shipper’s perspective are, real-time order and shipment visibility, alerts for orders and shipments that deviate from plan, and timely KPI and performance data.

Our longstanding membership in the IWLA and specifically our participation in its annual Convention provide us with a leg up in today’s challenging business environment. Meeting with other professionals in the warehousing and logistics industry, we are able to discuss trends, identify best practices and collaborate on solutions to support the continued growth and success of our individual companies and of an industry for which we share a passion.

Key to Top Notch Freight Service is Communication

When I first started in the transportation industry, some 20 years ago now, I was told about the importance of communication.  Of course, back then we still used pagers, fax machines with rolled paper, and the entire office shared a bag cell phone.  We had to keep in constant communication with our customers, provide updates, and keep a log of all correspondence.  In today’s high tech world phone calls are tracked, email time stamps everything, and mobile technology allows automated communication between the truck, the office, and even the customer.  We probably spend less than half the amount of time using the phone today as we did then, yet accomplish more with these tools.

Hey Detroit…Count Us In!

Detroit Billboard PicA few years ago the Pure Michigan campaign was launched. This extremely successful ad campaign was launched to promote travel and tourism. Each time I see one of the campaign ads, I am struck by the gorgeous photos of our state…sparkling lakes…breathtaking golf courses… stunning fall colors. Backed by the inspiring voices of Michigan natives like Tim Allen and Jeff Daniels, throw in some heartwarming music and the result – Pure Pride.

More recently, Chrysler’s compelling Super Bowl ad caught our attention. I remember watching the scenes of Detroit, and listening to the words of another devoted Detroit native, Eminem touting “This is the Motor City and this is What We Doreferring to our beloved auto industry. It was awesome! I got goose bumps as Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” kicked in, and a voice asked “What does this city know about luxury? What does a town that’s been to hell and back know about the finer things in life?” I remember saying to my family, “Was that national or local?”…hoping it was national. It seemed to truly convey the city’s spirit, attitude and passion.

Port of Virginia Growth-Part 3: A “One-Stop” Port

Continuing on with our Port of Virginia growth series I want to talk about their idea of a “One-Stop” Port.  Keeping in mind the investments in the port infrastructure have already been made and the other improvements under way (Part 1 – Heartland Corridor, Part 2 – National Gateway) this seems like the next logical step for the Port, right?

Nathan Wheeling Joins Our Team – Welcome!

We are thrilled to welcome a new addition in our Sales Department for 2011.  Nathan Wheeling joined our team just this week and will be taking on the role of Account Manager for our Evans Logistics, Inc. division.  Nathan brings several years of experience in the freight brokerage/transportation management  arena.  I recently sat down with him to get some insights into his experience and what he is looking to accomplish as part of the Evans team.

Port of Virginia Growth-Part 2: National Gateway & Crescent Corridor

Last month we began our 3 part series on the Port of Virginia discussing the NS Heartland Corridor.  This was exciting news by itself for our area and industry, but it isn’t the only thing happening for this port!

For years now experts have been projecting significant growth in container volumes destined for the East Coast once the Panama Canal expansion is complete in 2014.  The Virginia Port Authority (VPA) has been preparing for these projected increases for a number of years with significant investments in new equipment, new berths, and new terminals in hopes of becoming the largest and busiest port on the East Coast.

Logistics Employees Get Creative with Video

Employee in Scream Mask

At a recent company meeting we decided to mix it up a little and let our employees get creative.  A couple weeks prior we gave 10 different departments a flip camera to film a short video about their people, their operation, jobs, etc… and asked that they put a Halloween or Horror Movie theme to it (the meeting was right before Halloween).

CSA 2010 – What & When?

“So, what exactly is CSA 2010?”

I’ve heard this question asked a lot over the past several months, and wanted to give a little insight to our customers and readers regarding this important initiative.

Port of Virginia Growth-Part 1: NS Heartland Corridor

On September 8th the first double-stacked container train departed the Port of Virginia’s Norfolk International Terminal via the newly completed Heartland Corridor on the Norfolk Southern Railway.  While this wasn’t really considered news worthy outside of the Transportation Industry, I think it was very good news for the Port of Virginia.
